If the compensation is By Agreement (BYA), enter the BYA amount in the designated field on the request form. If the compensation is based on the annual salary, enter the FTE and annual rate. The annual salary for a visiting faculty/instructor who does not hold an academic title should be comparable to the rate that would be given to a normal departmental hire.
The general formula is 11% of the annual salary for each eligible 3 to 5-unit course they teach. For courses of other unit size, the percentage is adjusted up or down, according to the table below.
The maximum faculty or instructor may earn is 22% during one session and 33% total for the entire summer.
Table: Summer Compensation Policy | |
Number of Units | % of AY Salary |
1 | 4% |
2 | 8.5% |
3 to 5 | 11% |
6 to 10 | 22% |
Example:
Academic Year (AY) Salary (as of June 30): $45,000
Teaching One 3-unit Course = 11%
Summer Compensation: $45,000 x 11% = $4,950
