A visiting faculty or instructor who holds an academic title at other UC campus is compensated based on the salary at their home campus, provided that the salary scale is comparable to that of Berkeley. Administrative stipends, above scale stipends, staff appointments and other compensation beyond the academic base salary will not be included in determining summer compensation. It is important to verify that the instructor is eligible for additional summer salary.
The process for hiring and paying someone whose home campus is not Berkeley (Multi-location Agreement or MLA) requires a review and approval from the Academic Personnel Office (APO) in the same way as all other MLAs, outlined by the APO. Summer Sessions will not generate a Summer Sessions Agreement Letter for MLA, and the hiring process cannot begin, until the APO approves the request.
MLAs can take a long time to process. The sooner the process begins with as much notice to all parties as possible, the better chance we have to ensure that your instructors have access to systems and teaching tools and that their pay is processed on time. In order to facilitate this process for Summer Sessions, please follow these guidelines:
-
Please review the APO process for MLA carefully and follow the steps as outlined. Please use the MLA form for Summer Sessions, with a few fields pre-populated with Summer Sessions information. Using the pre-populated form 1) standardizes the Summer Sessions MLA requests, 2) helps distinguish Summer Sessions MLA from all other MLA requests, and 3) streamlines the downstream processes with Summer Sessions and Berkeley Regional Services (BRS).
-
Please submit a Hire Request Form for the MLA in eHire at the same time you submit your request to the APO. A hire request for MLA in eHire serves as a heads-up to both Summer Sessions and BRS of pending review and approval by the APO. If the MLA request is denied by the APO, we will work with you to delete/cancel the hire request.
-
Once you receive the APO’s approval, please upload a copy of the signed form to the Summer 2022 Hire Approval Documents folder in Google Drive; please name the file to include the department and the proposed hire’s name.
Please note that the MLA process for those being hired from UCSF (participating in the Health and Sciences Compensation Plan, or HSCP) and those from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) differs slightly from the above. Please consult with your Regional contacts or APO in regards to these hires.
Please reach out to the Academic Personnel Office (appolicy@berkeley.edu) if you have any questions about the MLA process or policies. Please let us know if you have any questions about how to complete the pre-populated form (UPAY-560T) or how to submit the approval documentation.
